STEERING 9 9 4 Clean grease off pin and end of shaft Scribe location i f eye ee mark on pin on same side as chamfer in shaft 44 55 5 Supporting shaft assembly securely with chamfer up 1 p g pZ press pin out of shaft with arbor press f ei y i 4 NOTE Do not drive pin out with hammer This e si K will cause sticky or binding bearings when ii t V l i resssembled ll ii ii E iiile 6 Slide washer and seal off end of shaft eg Assembly 4 I 1 Be sure all parts are free of dirt Slide seal and ij of washer onto steering shaft with lip of washer towards i i 4 I ii i s pyy y y 4 4 i e I lower Gnd Of 7 rm w ay 1 2 Press pin back into shaft from chamfered side Lo V e e ri cate pin in shaft using scribe mark as reference gryy n NOTE Pin must be centered within 012 in or Q binding in the coupling will result rl 3 Check centering of pin fig 14 4 4 a Place just enough 3 8 flat washers on pin to pre V 4 i vent bearing block from bottoming when installed g I q V LV b Measure distance from end of pin to top of bear 4 ing with micrometer c Remove bearing and washers and place same bearing and washers on other end of pin Measure CliS 8 i1C fI O1 I1 end of pill to top of bearing If Fig l4 Checl lng Coupling Pin Centerlng micrometer readings in Steps b and c differ more than 012 repeat last part of Step 2 and recheck 7 Install mast jacket in vehicle as outlined in this 4 Apply a liberal amount of wheel bearing grease to section inside and outside of bearing blocks and inside of cover 5 Position tension spring and bearing blocks on pin Steermg Lmkuge 6 Slide cover over bearing blocks aligning reference For 1968 torque prevailing nuts are used to secure mark on cover with mark on shaft Install washer the tie for clamps Lock washers are no longer used and seal into end of cover and secure with snap ring Refer to torque specifications at rear of manual for cor retainer rect torque values CORVAIR SHOP MANUAL SUPPLEMENT
