AIR INJECTOR REACTOR SYSTEM 6T 4 S PUMP PULLEY then attempt to suck back through check valve Rep Cemem Flow should only be in one direction toward the Hold pump pulley from turning by compressing drive tub9 belt then loosen pump pulley bolts Replacement Remove drive belt as outlined above then remove Disconnect pump outlet tube at check valve Remove pump pulley check valve from tube being careful not to bend or Install pump pulley with retaining bolts hand tight twist tube Install and adjust drive belt as outlined above Hold pump pulley from turning by compressing drive AIR INJECTION TUBE belt then torque pump pulley bolts to 25 ft lbs Inspection Fig 5 R ch ck drive b 1t tension Bild adjust if 1 q i1 l There is no periodic service or inspection for the TUBE AND H i j f 1y E Z i f F E LTSS l Sp ti Fig 4 for carbon build lip and warped or Jburnt tubes Inspect all hoses for deterioration or holes Remove any carbon build up with a wire brush Inspect all tubes for cracks or holes Warped or burnt tubes require exhaust manifold Check all hose and tube connections replacement Check all tube and hose routing Interference may Cause Wea DIVERTER VALVE If leak is suspected on the pressure side of the sys Inspection tem or any tubes have been disconnected on the pres Check condition and routing of all lines especially sure side the connections should be checked for the signal line All lines must be secure without leaks with a soapy water solution With the pump crimps and not leaking running bubbles will form if a leak exists Disconnect signal line at valve A vacuum signal Replucenqenf must be available with engine running To replace any hose and or tube note routing then With engine stabilized at idle speed disconnect air remove hOS S and OI tub S as I quir d pump inlet to diverter valve hose at diverter valve No air should be escaping through from diverter CAUTION valve tube Manually open and close the throttle a aspegialtmatelfial tohwiilgsgand iih 1P91 t 1 momentary blast of air should discharge through NO O SY VPS OSS S Ou S Su S I S diverter tube for at least one second Install new h0ses s and or tubes s routing them as Defective valves should be replaced when I S mOVSd CAUTION Diverter valves although sometimes Tighten all COImSCtiOnS similar in appearance are designed to meet NOTE Use anti seize compound on threads of the tube to exhaust manifold connections CHECK VALVE Replacement I I I Inspedion Disconnect vacuum signal line Disconnect valve The check valve should be inspected whenever the mlet mild exhaust hOS9S r mOvS dweljter V3 1vS pump Outlet tube is disconnected from the Check Install inlet outlet and vacuum signal lines to d1 valve or whenever check valve failure is suspected Verter V3 1ve Start engine and Check System for A pump that had become inoperative and had shown leaks indications of having exhaust gases in the pump A R N EC QN PUMP would indicate check valve failure Inspedion Orally blow through the check valve toward tube Accelerate engine to approximately 1500 rpm and Ob serve air flow from tubes If air flow increases as en gine is accelerated pump is operating satisfactorily If air flow does not increase or is not present proceed as B follows Check for proper drive belt tension A A NOTE The A I R System is not completely noiseless Under normal conditions noise rises in pitch as engine speed increases To deter B l AIR INLET mine if excessive noise is the fault of the A I R AIR INJECTION TUBE System operate the engine with the pump drive y u belt removed If excessive noise does not exist gf with the belt removed proceed as follows SS S S S W 7 Check for a seized Air Injection Pump uZ B B A A Check hoses tubes and all connections for leaks and proper routing Check carburetor air cleaner for proper installation p g 5 A nI CI IOn Tube Check air injection pump for proper mounting CORVAIR SHOP MANUAL SUPPLEMENT
